Description

A delicious garlic chicken dish with a sweet and sour sauce, perfect served over rice or with vegetables.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon light brown sugar (packed)
  • 3 cloves garlic (pressed or finely minced)
  • 1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts (cut into 1-inch pieces; boneless skinless chicken thighs may be substituted)
  • 3 tablespoons cornstarch
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • 3 to 4 tablespoons olive oil (plus more if necessary)
  • 2 green onions (sliced into thin rounds)
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the sugar, apple cider vinegar, ketchup, soy sauce, sesame oil, light brown sugar, and minced garlic until well combined.
  2. In another bowl, mix cornstarch with salt and pepper. Coat the chicken pieces evenly with this mixture.
  3. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add the coated chicken and cook until golden brown on all sides (about 5–7 minutes).
  4. Pour the prepared sauce over the cooked chicken, stirring well to coat evenly. Simmer for an additional 2–3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly.
  5. Remove from heat and serve hot over rice or with your choice of vegetables.

Notes

  • This dish can be served with rice or a variety of vegetables.
  • Boneless skinless chicken thighs can be used as a substitute for the breasts.
