Description

A creamy cheddar cheese sauce served warm with cooked broccoli.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup shredded sharp cheddar cheese
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • Cooked broccoli, as desired

Instructions

  1. Add the butter to a small pot over low heat. When melted, quickly whisk in the flour to make a smooth mixture. (It will resemble a paste.)
  2. Slowly pour in the milk, whisking continually, to make a smooth consistency.
  3. Whisk while the milk mixture heats up until you see bubbles around the edges.
  4. Simmer for about 2 minutes, or until you can see that the milk has thickened.
  5. Remove the pot from the heat.
  6. Stir in the cheese and salt and whisk until the cheese melts into a thick sauce.
  7. Serve warm with prepared broccoli.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, consider adding a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  • This sauce can be used over pasta or as a dip.
