Description
Delicious cabbage burgers filled with savory ground beef and cabbage, wrapped in soft dough.
Ingredients
Scale
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 2¼ teaspoons active dry yeast
- 1 cup warm milk
- 2 tablespoons butter, melted
- 1 egg
- 1 pound ground beef
- 4 cups green cabbage, finely chopped
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 1 teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine warm milk, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5–10 minutes until it becomes foamy. This step always reminds me of watching bread dough come to life on the counter.
- Add the egg, melted butter, salt, and flour. Mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough for about 8–10 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place it in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a towel, and let it rise for about an hour until doubled in size.
- While the dough rises, melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the diced onion and cook until soft and fragrant. Stir in the ground beef and cook until browned.
- Next, add the chopped cabbage. At first it may look like too much cabbage, but it will quickly soften and shrink as it cooks. Season with salt and pepper, then cook until the cabbage becomes tender.
- Let the filling cool slightly before assembling the burgers.
- Punch down the risen dough and divide it into equal portions.
- Flatten each piece into a small circle. Place a spoonful of the cabbage filling in the center.
- Fold the dough around the filling and pinch the edges closed to form a smooth ball.
- Place each filled bun seam-side down on a lined baking sheet.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- Bake the oven baked cabbage burgers for about 18–22 minutes, or until the tops are golden brown and the bread is fully cooked.
- The smell at this point is incredible—warm bread and savory cabbage filling that makes everyone wander into the kitchen asking when dinner is ready.
Notes
- This recipe is perfect for a cozy family dinner. It always impresses guests and is a fun way to incorporate cabbage into a meal.
